Birthstones by Colour

A majority of the experts are unable to predict the exact cause of the formation of the birthstones. However, the records prove that the practice was initially introduced by the Egyptians, around 4500 years ago, who used these stones for their amulets. These amulets were prepared after consulting the astrologers, so as to derive the right kind of energy from these stones. These astrologers would consider an individual’s times of birth and the associated properties corresponding to the month. They would then suggest the right birthstone by colour.

In addition, they also used to study the movement of the planets along with their properties to protect against all kinds of evils or mishaps. There is a speculation, since ancient times that these stones possess mystical properties, which would supposedly attract good fortune. The birthstone system in the west was pioneered by two authors such as St. Jerome and Josephus during the 5th century. They go back to the custom of wearing special kinds of gems, corresponding to the tribes of Israel. They were also signs for the 12 zodiac signs existing in the society then.

These stones which were associated to the different months were often changed over the years. There a lot of descriptions of these gemstones and a majority of them were based on the colour, not the actual composition or the minerals in the stone. Therefore gems such as carnet and ruby were often confused amongst each other. Even today, there are millions of people who believe in the powers of birthstones.
